REDUCING THE EFFECTS OF TRANSPORTATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

By Ruth Ahenkan

Transportation is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. There are several actions that can be taken to reduce the impact of transportation on climate, such as;

Increasing the efficiency of vehicle technology: This means using advanced technologies to improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions of vehicles, such as hybrid, electric, or hydrogen vehicles. By using less fuel or cleaner energy sources, vehicles can emit less carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

Changing how we travel and transport goods: This means choosing more sustainable modes of transportation, such as public transit, cycling, walking, or carpooling, instead of driving alone. By reducing the number of vehicle miles traveled, we can lower the demand for fuel and the associated emissions. This also means optimizing the logistics and planning of freight transportation, such as using rail or waterways instead of trucks or planes, or consolidating shipments to avoid empty or partial loads.

Using lower-carbon fuels: This means switching to fuels that have lower carbon intensity, such as biofuels, renewable natural gas, or electricity from renewable sources, instead of fossil fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. By using lower-carbon fuels, we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are released when the fuel is burned.

These actions can help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement, which aim to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C and avoid the worst impacts of climate change.They can also bring other benefits, such as improving air quality, health, safety, affordability, and accessibility of transportation
